Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure which involves movement or transplantation of hair follicles from one part of the body to the balding part. These parts are known as donor site and recipient site respectively. The procedure is mainly used to treat the problem of male pattern baldness and is minimally invasive in nature. In some cases, the procedure is used to restore beard hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, pubic hair and chest hair as well.
Hair generally grows naturally in groups of 1 to 4 hairs and the current technologies and procedures harvest as well as transplant hair follicular units in their natural groupings. This is why modern day hair transplant processes help to achieve a very natural look. This kind of a procedure is termed as Follicular unit transplantation or FUT. However there are two major ways in which donor hair can be harvested and they include:
- Strip harvesting
- Follicular unit extraction or FUE.
When you first visit the surgeon or doctor for hair transplantation, then he will analyze your scalp, discuss your preferences and understand your expectations, and will then suggest the best possible approach. This is followed by a pre operativefolliscopywhich helps find out the actual existing density of hair in order to better assess the postoperative results of the newly transplanted hair grafts.
Prior to the surgical procedure, one has to refrain from usage of any drugs or medicines which may result in bleeding after the surgery. One must also refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption as they contribute to poor graft survival as well. Doctors may recommend post operative antibiotics as they help to prevent infections and graft wounds.
Recovery and post operative care
After the hair transplant procedure, one needs time to recover and this involves post operative care as well. These days, advancements in wound care have made way for semi permeable dressing which allows seepage of tissue fluid and blood. This dressing must be applied and then changed everyday. Mostly, doctors ask patients to avoid going out in the sun and washing hair with shampoo for atleast two days after the procedure.
During the first 10 days after the hair transplant procedure some of the hair that have been transplanted may fall off due to trauma of relocation. This process is referred to as shock loss. The hair start growing from the moved follicles about two to three months later. The thickening of hair however happens for the next 6 to 9 months after normal growth.
Risks and side effects
One of the risks or side effects involved in hair transplantation is shock loss or hair thinning. This is however just a temporary effect. One may lose 50 to 100 hair everyday which leads to bald patches. But with proper care and getting treatment done from a recognised surgeon can minimize the chances of these side effects. In some cases, patient may also experience infection, excessive bleeding and scarring.
As mentioned above, it is advisable to get hair transplantation from recognised and well known doctors and hospitals.
